Brains on the Box: Only Connect

A new series of the  quiz show Only Connect has just kicked off on BBC4.

A new series? There’s already been a series?  Apparently, but that passed me by completely and this is the first time I’ve ever watched anything on BBC4.

Two teams of  exceptionally brainy people pit their wits against each other in a valiant attempt to figure out some pretty obscure connections between words, phrases, images, pieces of music and the like.

This is “a quiz show in which knowledge will only take you so far, as patience and lateral thinking are also vital,” according to the Beeb’s programme blurb. “It is all about making connections between things which may appear, at first glance, not to be connected at all.”

The quiz assumes a knowledge of the Greek alphabet –  these Alpha scholars need to know their Gamma from their Delta  simply to select questions. This  may carry a certain kudos, but what some viewers consider charmingly erudite, others may find annoyingly elitist.

The  programme  is hosted by Victoria  Coren  (presenter of Balderdash and Piffle)  who has noticed that the questions in the new series are even trickier than they were in the first series.

“To be honest, I think it’s a bit TOO hard this series. Just slightly,” say Victoria.  “Might need tiny tone down if we do another one…”

 Best of luck with that.

Only Connect, BBC4, currently available on BBC iPLayer
