Ashes to Ashes: the Quattro bites the dust

The finale of Ashes to Ashes painted a bleak picture – a study in death, separation, loneliness and loss.

Even the poor old Quattro bit the dust, her bold red bodywork riddled with bullets.

Alex joined Shaz, Chris and Ray, leaving behind the limbo of their lives as eternal crime-fighters, and walking through a pub door which lead to the light.

Only Gene Hunt remained, an avenging angel in a twilight world of his own making: a world of wayward cops and robbers caught in the nick of time.

At the end of the previous series, there was still a glimmer of hope that DI Alex Drake would recover after taking the bullet, and be reunited with her daughter Molly. At that point, it looked like she would have to choose between guv Gene Hunt and Molly.  In the final reckoning, she got neither.

So ends the saga after two series of Life on Mars and three of Ashes to Ashes.

According to Matthew Graham, who co-created the show with with Ashley Pharoah, and wrote the final episode, Hunt will not be returning to TV, and  the only chance of him putting in another appearance would be:  “If Hollywood came calling …”

So, supposing  a movie were to be made, where does Hunt go from here?

With Sam Tyler and Bolly gone, and the Quattro totalled, the guv is a man in need of a new drinking companion, a new love interest and a new motor.

Hunt was last seen leafing through a Mercedes catalogue, and there could be more Gene Genie magic to come if he makes it to the big screen – but this is the end of an era. “Fire up the Merc” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.
