Outcasts: Sci-fi cast off to Sunday night slot

Outcasts is to be sidelined to a Sunday night slot after a sharp drop  in viewing figures, leaving this much-hyped sci-fi series looking like one of the Beeb’s cast-offs.

Killing off  the hunkiest male lead, played by Jamie Bamber, at the end of the first  episode, probably didn’t help.  If fans were left wondering whether Mitchell was suffering from  space lurgy and would be resurrected Zombie-like from his rubbly grave, their hopes faded with the passing of  further episodes.

He leaves behind him an excellent cast including Hermione Norris (Spooks) Daniel Mays (Ashes to Ashes) and Eric Mabius (Ugly Betty) all struggling heroically with a second-rate script.

The first episode of Outcasts on 7 February  drew  4.4 million viewers, but this dropped to 2.9 million by episode three.  After next Monday’s 9pm instalment, the series is scheduled to move to 10.25pm from Sunday 27 February.
